We saw signs everywhere that boys were not thriving. But what David helped us discover when we opened that can of worms is that the biggest piece they are missing in their lives is a positive male role model, and one who is ready for the 21st century. Invariably, when David brought a group of men together and developed a safe context to ask them key questions, the majority of them named struggles and wounds in the relationship with their own fathers, and this self-awareness bonded them with other men. We have been inspired to focus on engaging men in this work, and David is an invaluable resource to increase our community’s capacity. To use a sports image, we know we need to add some new plays to our playbook if we are going to get boys back in the game, and our men, even the star players, need to have the opportunity to learn these new plays so they can be more effective. The game has changed, and David is on the leading edge of what it will become.
